A Blog is Born

Not long ago it was that I was adamant I would not be caught dead blogging, tweeting or updating statuses. As it happens, I know a few people who are still assailing me with their “I told you so’s” today.

I still remember sitting on a number of occasions, my nose at an upwards angle, my tone of voice a little haughty and a lot self-assured, as I lectured my family and friends about the pointless existence of these social networking sites. I had a strong argument formulated for whenever this topic came up in conversation (let’s face it; in this day and time, the probability of it coming up in conversation is quite high) and I would immediately draw it out like a sabre, shouting “en garde!” in my mind, before I began my onslaught of indubitably compelling points.

What am I doing here then? Well, that’s simple. I’ve had a change of heart.

Why? That one’s a little more convoluted.

I realised that I always had so much to say, so much I wanted to share with people, so many opinions that I needed to voice and communicate. I didn’t know where to go with all of these thoughts that were being left unsaid, I didn’t know where to vent or who to rant to. But nowadays, people are more willing to listen, they are more open to different outlooks and standpoints. In fact, not only do they listen and take it in, but they reply, retweet, like and share (in addition to just finding out you can reblog with WordPress)! This eagerness to engage and get involved, this concept of being able to send out a single thought to an ocean of people that are connected through one platform, fascinated me.

When I expressed that to my family and friends, they were all unanimous about two things:

1. I needed to start a blog.

2. And then I needed to get on the twitter bandwagon to more or less create a fan base of sorts.

I’m not gonna lie…I got excited.

Shortly after, I created a twitter account (@SuadShamma), only because it was the easier of the two to work with. I found my way around this infamous thing they call twitter, I taught myself how to limit my thoughts (also known as tweets) to 140 characters and I slowly established a group of followers (while I followed people in a mad frenzy).

Blogging was a little harder to do – for me anyway. I kept putting it off, as one minute I was torn about which site to use, the next minute uncertain about what I wanted to call my blog. This went on for a while before I finally took the plunge.

Here I am. Swimming in a sea of creativity, inspiration, and individuality. I’m not quite sure yet where I want to go with this blog, or what I’m aiming to achieve with it. I don’t have a set goal that I want to accomplish or a set theme that I’m going to follow.

But here’s what I do know: I know that this blog will contain a lot of ranting, a lot of random musings, a lot of everyday experiences, and a lot of reviews (be it of books or movies – I did say I was opinionated). Eventually, it will start to form its own shape and follow its own path, which will only get clearer – I hope – the more I write.

I love writing, and I used to write frequently back in the olden days (i.e. pre-job days), but I haven’t made the time to write anything since. A friend recently told me, “when you write, write like no one’s going to read it”, and that’s a piece of advice that I, in turn, pass on to everyone who happens to come across this post.
